Stella died peacefully and quietly at home in my arms on Saturday, April 8, 2006 . It was heartbreaking to let her go but both Tom and I felt it was her time. During the last week it was obvious to us that she was succumbing to the disease and we were determined that she not suffer. We know we did everything we could to save her and it would have been inhumane to let her continue to decline. Stella had hemangiosarcoma, an aggressive type of blood cancer which has no known cure. We only became aware of the disease a short time ago and Stella lived her last weeks at home with us sleeping in the sun and eating roast beef, hot dogs, and other canine delicacies. She was courageous and kind until the end when our wonderful veterinarian, Dr. Karen Brown, came to our house and kindly and gently put Stella to sleep.
Tom and I send you our love and gratitude for all the kindness and support you have given to us and Stella during the past several weeks. And we know that Stella is remembering all the affection and loving pats she received during her pet therapy as she is forever chasing squirrels in her place in heaven.
